CEO: South Africa’s Eskom will postpone closing several of its coal plants

At an energy conference in Cape Town on Tuesday, Dan Marokane, the chief executive of Eskom, the state power provider of South Africa, announced that the company will “in a very considered manner” postpone the closing of several of its coal-fired power facilities until 2030.

The decommissioning of Eskom’s Camden, Grootvlei, and Hendrina (CGH) coal stations over the next few years, as originally planned, is “nearly impossible” from a technical and political economy standpoint due to the country’s power supply problem, the company had previously told Reuters.

“Eskom intends to delay the shutdown of the CGH plants until March 2030, and to manage its carbon reduction targets through fleet-wide initiatives,” previously stated.
