Trump Claims Permanent US Grip On Greenland's Security Under New Arctic Deal

Washington has struck a deal with Copenhagen and Nuuk that President Donald Trump describes as handing the United States permanent authority over security matters in Greenland, along with a promise that rival powers will be shut out of the Arctic island. How The Announcement Came Trump revealed the arrangement in a weekend post on X, framing it as a settlement of concerns Washington has raised for years about the strategic value of the semi-autonomous Arctic territory. “I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns,” Trump said. What The President Says It Gives Washington According to Trump, the deal hands the United States open-ended latitude to act however it judges necessary in defense of both the island and American interests. “At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump said. He characterized the pact as an “‘Infinite Life’ Agreement”, adding that “there is no end”. Shutting Out Rival Powers A central plank of the arrangement, as Trump described it, is a veto over any hostile power seeking a military or financial position on the island. “Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval,” he said. A State Department official said the text would bar China and Russia from setting up bases or deploying forces in Greenland and would place limits on investment in sensitive industries. A Bigger American Military Footprint Trump also signaled that the US intends to widen its military presence on the island, and said construction would be pursued alongside Greenlanders themselves. “We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many,” Trump said. “We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction.” The Backdrop In Copenhagen And Nuuk The announcement follows months of friction driven by Trump's repeated calls for greater American control over Greenland, which governs its own affairs while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Officials in Denmark and Greenland have stressed that the understanding leaves Danish sovereignty intact and preserves Greenlanders' right to decide their own political future. What Still Has To Happen Signature is expected during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, and the deal must still clear parliamentary steps in both Denmark and Greenland. The full text has not been released. Accounts of the arrangement suggest it would make American access, basing and overflight rights permanent without transferring sovereignty away from Denmark.
