The EU is contemplating Canada as its first associate member, according to Von Der Leyen

The EU is contemplating granting Canada its inaugural associate membership, aiming to enhance collaboration in areas such as defense, trade, climate, technology, and mutual democratic principles.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that the European Union is contemplating Canada as its inaugural associate member, as both parties aim to strengthen their strategic partnership.

Von der Leyen made the remarks during her annual State of the European Union address in Strasbourg, emphasizing the increasing significance of enhanced collaboration between Europe and Canada.

She stated that stronger partnerships are becoming more essential as the international rules-based order faces challenges and geopolitical divisions intensify.

Von der Leyen stated that the EU and Canada align on several significant issues, such as artificial intelligence, climate change, Arctic affairs, and wider geopolitical developments.

She also emphasized collaboration on assistance for Ukraine, defense, access to essential raw materials, and enhancing the resilience of supply chains.

Von der Leyen stated that the bond between the EU and Canada is founded on common democratic principles, highlighting democracy as a fundamental value connecting both parties.

The proposed arrangement would create a new type of relationship with the EU, as associate membership is not presently included in the bloc’s treaties.
