About twelve months before she died, Dolly Parton is said to have made a quiet trip to Germany in search of an experimental treatment for cancer, according to reports.
People with knowledge of the trip told reporters the singer boarded a private jet bound for Frankfurt to undergo the procedure. Precisely what the treatment involved has not been established. The same sources said she remained in the country roughly a week before heading back home.
Parton came away believing the treatment had rebuilt some of her strength and considered it to have worked, those sources said.
The country star fought cancer privately through the last year of her life, and her decision to seek care abroad was part of that. Those in her circle were aware she was unwell, though the wider public had little sense of how serious her condition had become.
She died on August 25 after what sources characterized as a private struggle with the disease. Family members and close friends made their way to Nashville once word reached them that she had been admitted to hospital and was gravely ill.
A private service followed, and she was laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville.
Neither the form of cancer she is reported to have had nor the specifics of the experimental treatment have been made public.
