As Lil Durk's federal murder for hire trial neared a jury, Brian Steel challenged Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester's criminal record, changing narratives and a cooperation bargain.
Tuesday's closing arguments by Lil Durk's defense made Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester's credibility one of the major obstacles to his conviction. The OTF Jam testimony has been key to the government's case against Durk Banks. Defense attorney Brian Steel began his September 8 closing argument by pushing jurors to examine the guy prosecutors used to link Durk to the Quando Rondo conspiracy.
“He has been incarcerated more in his lifetime than he has been out,” Steel told jurors, according to Parise. “This man is not human... This is who the government wants you to trust.”
Steel also questioned how Hester's story developed while collaborating with police.
Is it because they rehearsed with Hester? Steel added, “How dare they put him in front of you and continue this story? They know it's false."
When considering the complete history of OTF Jam testimony, that attack makes more sense.
Hester testified that he had known Durk since they were teenagers and had been a Black disciple since boyhood, according to Los Angeles Magazine. Hester told jurors he acquired status via violence and was a gang shooter. He also said that he first held a rifle at 12.
Hester told jurors he served 12 years for attempted murder. He told Los Angeles Magazine that Durk returned his calls and contributed to his attorney and prison account during his term. Hester said Durk supported him after returning home in early 2022.
That extended relationship makes Hester essential to prosecutors. An OTF Jam witness says he was close to Durk for years and participated in the August 2022 shooting.
Hester stated that he was freed from prison in February 2022 and taken to California months later. He confessed to the August 19, 2022 Beverly Center shooting that killed Quando Rondo's cousin Saviay'a Robinson, whose legal name is Tyquian Bowman.
The Justice Department initially accused Durk of orchestrating an attack on Bowman in retaliation for King Von's November 2020 murder, his legal name being Dayvon Bennett. Federal prosecutors said multiple guys followed Bowman around Los Angeles before firing 18 shots at his car. Robinson died, but Bowman lived.
Durk denies directing the shooting and has pled not guilty.
A major part of Hester's backstory came after the Los Angeles attack. Hester was caught in May 2023 while driving with a gun while on parole. Hester wrote to a guard that he knew of murders while in prison. Steel faced intense cross-examination on his cooperation with investigators.
Steel faced Hester with a May 24, 2023,2022, interview in which Hester told authorities he had not mentioned King Von, Quando Rondo, or a payment before Robinson was killed, according to Los Angeles Magazine. Hester later told jurors about potential Durk talks before the incident. The defense has frequently argued that Hester's road to a reduced sentence made the OTF Jam testimony more harmful to Durk.
Hester pled guilty to murdering Robinson and testified with the idea that his cooperation would be regarded when punished. Prosecutors stressed that Hester had to tell the truth and that the government had not offered a sentence reduction.
Public doubts regarding Hester date back over two years. OTF Jam was accused of secretly cooperating with authorities shortly after Durk's arrest.
Hester's status was clear by August 2026, when Durk's trial began. The prosecution identified him as a cooperating witness who had pled guilty, and he testified against Durk.
The government relied on more than Hester. Keith Jones and Durk's former assistant Kavon “OTF Vonnie” Grant both pled guilty and collaborated with prosecutors. The prosecution told jurors that the cooperators would provide personal testimonies linking Durk to the revenge plot, but the defense maintained they had great motivations to shift blame to the most renowned individual.
Steel emphasized that conflict in concluding arguments.
Steel portrayed Durk as a celebrity prosecutors pursued for his name and prominence rather than evidence he joined the alleged agreement.
“They target people. A celebrity. That’s why you attended.”
Steel further stated that being connected to OTF does not mean Durk agreed to others' crimes. The defense has argued that prosecutors must prove Durk willfully engaged the conspiracy rather than infer guilt from his relationships, music, money, or OTF position.
“Durk Banks is not guilty,” Steel told the jurors. “If there is any doubt about Durk's involvement, the verdict is not guilty.”
Wednesday, September 9, jury deliberations were scheduled after Durk and his codefendants rested without testifying. After weeks of testimony, surveillance evidence, digital records, and competing accounts, jurors must decide whether prosecutors proved Durk's involvement beyond a reasonable doubt or whether the OTF Jam testimony's credibility issues prevent a conviction.
