Sisi of Egypt directs the prime minister to assemble a new cabinet

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly resigned from his cabinet on Monday, following Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s reelection for a third term last year, and Madbouly was reappointed by Sisi to form a new administration, the president announced in a statement.

The presidency further stated that Sisi gave the incoming administration instructions to concentrate on controlling markets, bringing in more international and local investment, and reducing inflation.

According to the announcement, the new cabinet members’ goals would also include counterterrorism and maintaining the nation’s national security in the face of regional and global threats.

When the new cabinet will be unveiled, as well as which ministers would be dismissed in the much anticipated reshuffle, were not immediately clear.

On X, Sisi wrote: “Today, I assigned Dr Mostafa Madbouly to form a new government that consists of the necessary expertise and competencies to manage the next phase, in order to achieve the desired development in government performance and confront the challenges facing the state.”

After winning an election last December with 89.6% of the vote and no real competitors, Sisi took office for a third term in April.

Over the previous two years, as Egypt struggled to control a persistent lack of foreign currency and soaring inflation, there had been rumors that Madbouly himself may be replaced.

The economy had some respite earlier this year with record-breaking investment agreements with the United Arab Emirates and international financing agreements, such as an enlarged loan program with the IMF.
