Pochettino, who was humiliated at Arsenal, is annoyed by Chelsea’s lack of consistency
Only days after Chelsea put up a strong fight against Manchester City in an FA Cup semi-final match, their 5-0 hammering against Arsenal in the Premier League on Tuesday left manager Mauricio Pochettino fuming at his team’s lack of consistency.
Leandro Trossard gave the Emirates the lead early on, but Ben White and Kai Havertz, a former Chelsea player, both scored twice in the second half to complete the north London club’s biggest-ever victory in the meeting.
Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for Europe the next season were severely damaged by the loss, which came after they had gone eight games without losing in the league.
“We are very awful on our worst days. We can do anything when we’re good, Pochettino told reporters.
“The players cannot be held responsible; I will not hold the players accountable. We cannot hold young men responsible for coming here to fight against a Premier League-winning club after going through some difficult times.
“It is true we are disappointed with our performance, but I am not going to say something which is unfair to describe our team, our players, our squad.”
After that, Chelsea will visit fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur on May 2 and go to fourth-place Aston Villa on Saturday.
