French police apprehend two individuals in connection with a substantial cocaine seizure
French police have apprehended two individuals following the seizure of over two tons of cocaine at the port of Le Havre. The estimated value of the cocaine is 130 million euros ($134 million).
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT:
France and other European governments are attempting to address the issue of drug trafficking organizations and the fatal murders that frequently occur as a result of inter-gang warfare.
The European Union initiated a campaign in collaboration with European port authorities last year to combat drug smuggling in key port cities.
CONTEXT:
Francois Bayrou, the new French Prime Minister, and Bruno Retailleau, the interior minister, have also committed to taking more severe measures against narcotic cartels and crime in general.
