After putting gasoline on a 20-year-old woman and setting her on fire, a guy was charged with attempted murder

Earlier this month, a man in Harnett County, North Carolina, was accused of setting a 20-year-old lady on fire and was charged with attempted murder.

Ashanti Downey arrived with burns on her right side of her body at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford on December 16th, prompting the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office to receive a 911 call. After being transported to a burn center, Downey’s status is stable but serious. According to arrest warrants, investigators accused 23-year-old Jami Raiziah Griffin of assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and attempted first-degree murder. According to the murder warrant, Griffin is accused of giving Downey second and third degree burns by dousing him with gasoline. Griffin has already been accused of calling another woman on November 6th and threatening her.

Downey was walking close to N.C. 27 West and Barbecue Church Road when three unidentified people allegedly doused her in gasoline and lit her on fire with a cigarette, according to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office. Griffin is expected to appear in court on Monday and is being held at the Harnett County Detention Center without the possibility of bond.

As of Saturday morning, more than $86,000 had been received through an online GoFundMe for Downey’s medical bills.

On the campaign website, her mother, Donecia Davis, said, “My daughter will be celebrating her 21st birthday on January 1st, 2025, and her life will be forever changed due to the hatred of an individual or individuals.”
