Kyrgios and Djokovic are enjoying their connection in the Brisbane doubles
As the 24-time Grand Slam champion landed in the city on Saturday ahead of the Australian Open tune-up competition, Novak Djokovic claimed that working with Nick Kyrgios in the Brisbane International will be enjoyable.
After their most recent encounter, in the 2022 Wimbledon final, the pair, who had previously clashed when Kyrgios called Djokovic “boneheaded” and a “tool,” have become good friends.
“It’s going to be fun,” Djokovic said, speaking as he prepares to compete for a record-tying 11th Australian Open title.
“We spoke about playing together when he returns to the circuit and texted about it earlier in Wimbledon this year. In the opening week of the season, we have the first opportunity.
Due to injuries to his knee, foot, and wrist, Kyrgios has only participated in one singles tour match in the past two years. Kyrgios quipped that the 37-year-old Djokovic’s excitement about their cooperation was understandable.
“Everyone believes that playing with him is enjoyable, but in reality, playing with me is enjoyable… Let’s be honest,” the unconventional Australian jokingly said.
“No, look, before either his or my careers finished, we wanted to play at least once.
“It’s crucial that the supporters understand that once you have a team like this. Because having two wonderful personalities and attempting to have some fun is what tennis is all about.”
Before the Australian Open starts on January 12, the main draw for the Brisbane tournament will run from Sunday to January 5.
