Early in January, a Canadian politician will begin working to overthrow the Trudeau administration
In an effort to have Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration overthrown as soon as possible, a Canadian parliamentary committee headed by a member of the opposition Conservative Party would meet during legislative vacation, the lawmaker announced on Friday.
Committee Chair John Williamson wrote to panel members that the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee will start meeting on January 7 to discuss and vote on a resolution of non-confidence in the Liberal administration. To overthrow the government, the motion must eventually pass the House of Commons.
Congress will meet again on January 27.
Resignation of former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on Dec. 16 has increased pressure on Trudeau, who has been in office since 2015.
According to Conservative MP Williamson, he was willing to engage with lawmakers throughout January in order to stage a vote of non-confidence as early as January 30. That would happen weeks before an opposition party would normally put forth a motion of that kind.
Trudeau’s choices have become more limited when Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the New Democratic Party, who has been assisting in maintaining the Liberals’ hold on power, declared last week that he will take steps to overthrow the minority Liberal administration and call for an election.
“The Liberal Government’s lack of parliamentary confidence is clearly evident. “A majority of Members of Parliament, including members of the Conservative, Bloc Quebecois, and NDP parties, have declared their intention to vote against the Liberal Government,” Williamson stated in a social media post of a copy of the letter.
To legally end the current session and stop opposition legislators from voting on a vote of non-confidence, Trudeau may, however, prorogue parliament.
Singh failed to specify how his party would vote on resolutions put forth by other parties, but he did state that he will bring a motion of non-confidence when the elected House of Commons returns from winter break. For the government to be overthrown, a single motion supported by all opposition parties would be required.
Four Conservative MPs, five Liberal MPs, and one each from the NDP and Bloc Quebecois make up the Williamson-led panel.
Governments in Canada are required to demonstrate their support for the elected House of Commons. Budget and other expenditure votes are seen as confidence tests, and a government loses if it loses one. In almost every instance, an election campaign begins right away.
