On Tuesday, five family members—three of whom were children—were found dead in a Utah home. According to police accounts, a 17-year-old was also taken to a hospital after suffering a gunshot wound.

West Valley City Police Department spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku said the deceased included two adults, an 11-year-old boy, and two daughters, ages 9 and 2. Their deaths’ precise cause is yet unknown.

About 9 miles (14 kilometers) southwest of Salt Lake City, in West Valley City, the remains were discovered in a home. The garage was where the injured teen was discovered.

“Absolutely horrific,” Vainuku said at a press conference at night. Investigators in this case will undoubtedly be greatly impacted by this.

According to Vainuku, authorities do not suspect an at-large offender because they think the shooting was a lone incident that only happened in the house.

According to sources, the 17-year-old’s injuries and hospitalization have made communication difficult, which makes the inquiry more difficult.

After failing to get in touch with the 38-year-old woman who lived in the house, the relative called the police on Monday. When officers went to the house, they got no reaction.

After hearing from the same relative that they had found the injured teen in the garage, they went back on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Vainuku, police are investigating the house, talking to neighbors, and looking at information from sources like doorbell cameras.
