Biden cancels more than a million benefits for public servants and an additional $4.5 billion in student debt

President Biden has approved $175 billion in relief, including the cancellation of $4.5 billion in student debt for 60,000 borrowers.

More than 60,000 borrowers had an additional $4.5 billion in student loan debt forgiven by US President Joe Biden on Thursday, increasing the total number of public sector employees who have had their student debts forgiven to over 1 million.

According to a White House statement, the Biden-Harris Administration has authorized $175 billion in student debt relief for almost 5 million students through a variety of initiatives.

The Democratic president’s plan to cancel student loans has been criticized by Republicans as an abuse of power and an unfair advantage for borrowers with college degrees while denying such relief to others. US District Judge Matthew Schelp, a Republican appointee of former President Donald Trump, of St. Louis, issued a preliminary injunction earlier this month that prevents the Biden administration from “mass canceling” student loans and forgiving principal or interest under the plan while the state’s lawsuit is still pending.
