The Netherlands is considering sending African asylum applicants who have been denied entry to Uganda

Late Wednesday, the Dutch commerce and development minister stated that the conservative government is considering sending rejected African asylum seekers to Uganda.

During a visit to the East African nation, Reinette Klever presented the idea, but it was not immediately apparent if the plan would be possible or legal, or if Uganda would be open to it.

According to Ugandan Foreign Affairs Minister Jeje Odongo, “We are open to any discussions,” during an interview with Dutch television NOS.

By establishing “return hubs” outside the EU to house denied asylum seekers before sending them back to their home countries, the plan is in line with a European trend.
