A manhunt is under way after a woman was killed and several others were hurt at a Swiss rave
A 22-year-old woman has lost her life, and five others have sustained injuries, some of them serious, in a shooting that occurred overnight at a rave in the Swiss town of Aarau, according to local police on Sunday. All victims are reported to be residents of Switzerland and in their 20s.
Italy’s foreign ministry announced that Swiss authorities had informed them of the death of an Italian woman and that Italy would support the investigation.
A manhunt is currently in progress, with extensive sections of the town sealed off, according to police. They are urging the public to provide any images related to the incident.
We currently lack details regarding the individuals responsible for the attack. Police spokesperson Bernhard Graser informed Reuters, “We don’t know whether it’s one person or several, or whether they are fleeing by vehicle or on foot.
CONCEALING BEHIND THE DJ BOOTH
A 34-year-old witness, who requested to remain anonymous, informed Reuters that he heard gunshots shortly after the music ceased at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, which he initially believed to be fireworks.
Some sought refuge behind a DJ booth, while a woman concealed herself behind a refrigerator, only to be struck in the back by a bullet, ultimately succumbing to her injuries despite attempts to save her, he recounted. “It’s simply heartbreaking. “She was young,” he told Reuters. It is truly unfathomable that an incident of this nature could occur in Aarau, particularly at a community event. I still can’t fully understand it. Authorities reported that a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the location of the incident.
Convoys and armored vehicles
Police have heightened their presence beyond the town, located approximately 50 km west of Zurich and 30 km south of the German border, as a precaution. However, police spokesperson Graser indicated that there are signs suggesting the shooter or shooters are no longer in the immediate vicinity.
However, there remains a significant police presence in the area, in the town of Aarau, throughout the entire state (canton) to ensure that we can apprehend them if they are still nearby,” he stated.
Footage from Reuters depicted armed officers surveying the area, police convoys traversing the streets, and armored vehicles stationed near the crime scene.
The organizers’ website promoted the event as a techno party at a covered horse racetrack, anticipating an attendance of 3,500 people.
Organizers expressed their shock and heartbreak over the incident.
“A rave should always be a place of joy and love, never a place where people are harmed, injured, or left in fear,” they stated.
Switzerland boasts one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe; however, incidents of violent shootings are infrequent. In 2019, the country enacted stricter gun control regulations.
