Inter Miami has named ‘Kily’ Gonzalez as their new manager
Inter Miami has announced the appointment of Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez as manager, while interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos will continue in his role until the Argentine obtains the required U.S. work permits, the Major League Soccer (MLS) club stated on Thursday.
Hoyos, who was formerly in charge of Miami’s professional development structure, took on the role temporarily after Javier Mascherano resigned in April.
Miami strengthened their team by signing Brazil midfielder Casemiro last month. However, despite having Lionel Messi and several seasoned players, the results have remained disappointing.
The current MLS Cup champions have suffered defeats in four of their last five matches and currently sit in second place in the Eastern Conference, trailing Nashville by 10 points. “Inter Miami wishes to particularly acknowledge and express gratitude to Hoyos for his unwavering commitment and dedication to the club, as evidenced by his readiness to take on this role during this time, which commenced last April,” Miami stated.
Gonzalez earned 56 caps for Argentina from 1995 to 2005, and his playing career included stints with Inter Milan, Valencia, and Rosario Central. The 52-year-old transitioned into coaching in 2020 and has since taken the helm at several clubs in Argentina.
Hoyos will be absent from the sidelines for Saturday’s match against CF Montreal due to a one-match suspension imposed by MLS, following the club’s repeated violations of rules regarding delayed kick-offs.
