The 89-year-old monarch was admitted to Oslo University Hospital on 17 August due to a bacterial infection in his blood.

Harald, the longest-reigning monarch in Europe, has held the position of Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991.

The royal court announced on Thursday that the king’s condition had deteriorated but did not provide additional information regarding his ongoing treatment.

Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja have called off all their scheduled engagements, as stated by the palace.

Members of the royal family, including Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja, were observed arriving at Oslo University Hospital, where the king is currently receiving medical care.

Harald has encountered ongoing health issues in recent years and has scaled back his public responsibilities due to his age.

In 2024, he announced intentions to reduce his official engagements but dismissed any notion that he would step down.

The king declared at that time that his oath of office was for life, indicating his intention to stay on the throne.

Harald ascended to the throne in 1991 after the passing of his father, King Olav V. He has since continued to serve as a primarily ceremonial figurehead while Norway functions as a constitutional monarchy.
