Whitney Houston expressed her desire for a Barbie doll two decades ago, and now Mattel has finally released it

Mattel’s inaugural Barbie tribute to Whitney Houston showcases one of her most iconic looks for collectors, fulfilling a vision the superstar spoke about nearly twenty years ago.

The Whitney Houston Barbie has officially arrived, offering fans a fresh opportunity to honor one of the most iconic voices and images in music history. Mattel’s Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll captures the essence of Houston’s iconic look from the music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” The doll features her lilac dress, vibrant earrings, stylish pumps, and the signature voluminous curls of the 1980s. Mattel prices the collector doll at $60.

The release on August 9 held an even more profound significance, as the date would have commemorated Houston’s 63rd birthday. Mattel created the doll in partnership with Pat Houston, who is Whitney’s sister-in-law and the executor of the estate of Whitney E. Houston.

Mattel stated that the Whitney Houston Barbie honors her “record-breaking career, legacy, and timeless music that inspired generations of artists and continues to resonate with fans around the world,” as mentioned in the statement. The doll includes a microphone and microphone stand, placing Barbie in a scene reminiscent of one of Houston’s iconic performances.

Pat remembered that Whitney “was truly eager to dedicate the time to creating a doll.” Although that version never came to fruition during the singer’s lifetime, Pat expressed that witnessing the idea finally come to life holds significant emotional resonance.

“Seeing that vision finally come to life decades later is both emotional and inspiring,” Pat told PEOPLE.

“I’m truly delighted that we’re witnessing this doll come to life, and it’s set to have a lasting impact across generations,” she continued. “I feel truly privileged to be here now, and we are genuinely making it happen.”

The link to “The Bodyguard” enriches the narrative further. The project Whitney once contemplated would have marked a pivotal moment in her career. The Bodyguard soundtrack has achieved 18-times multi-Platinum certification in the United States, establishing it as the highest-certified soundtrack in RIAA history.

Rather than seeking inspiration from “The Bodyguard” for the completed doll, Mattel revisited the vibrant visual landscape of 1987, which was defined by “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” This decision highlights Whitney at the peak of her vibrant pop stardom. Billboard reported that the song achieved the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, holding that position for two weeks in 1987. Houston’s official site highlights that the track was the first of four consecutive No. 1 singles from her second album, Whitney, and the song also earned her the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.

Pat referred to selecting that moment as a “no-brainer” during an interview with PEOPLE. She also emphasized that Mattel handled the specifics of the Whitney Houston Barbie with exceptional attention.

“I observed the dedication, the ingenuity, and the passion involved in honoring Whitney’s legacy,” she expressed. “It created an incredibly significant experience. I am truly thankful to have participated in a project that celebrates her artistry, her elegance, and the lasting impact she continues to have on the world.

That process extended, Pat remarked, “down to the earrings, to the color of the hair, to the color of the dress, to the details on the shoes.”

Mattel’s official product description emphasizes the importance of the original visual. The company depicts the doll adorned in a form-fitting lilac tank dress, complemented by vibrant earrings and stylish pumps, along with Houston’s iconic dramatic curls from that era. The company clearly points to the “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” video as the source of inspiration.

“Being a part of all that was incredible, even just walking through their showroom,” Pat shared with PEOPLE. “Everyone was deeply engaged in every facet of crafting this remarkable doll … they are quite meticulous in their approach, aiming to make the moment memorable, and they certainly achieved that for this specific project.”

The doll is arriving during a notably vibrant time for the late superstar’s catalog and legacy. Just two days prior to the doll’s birthday release, Houston’s estate unveiled “WH1TNEY,” a collection that compiles all 11 of her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles. Houston’s official website announced the release on August 7, highlighting that both the album and Barbie are integral to the birthday celebrations honoring her legacy.

The Barbie also aligns with significant institutional acknowledgment for Houston in 2026. Houston was one of the artists chosen for the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, alongside Chaka Khan, Cher, Carlos Santana, Fela Kuti, and Paul Simon. The Recording Academy’s records indicate that Houston achieved six Grammy wins from 25 nominations throughout her recording career.

Her home state also honored her impact. The New Jersey Hall of Fame hosted a Whitney Houston Capstone Event at American Dream in February 2026, celebrating the New Jersey native and Hall of Fame inductee.
