China has accused the United States of meddling in the business cooperation between Argentina and Huawei by imposing visa restrictions, which has escalated diplomatic tensions in Latin America.
China has charged the United States with meddling in the business relationship between Argentina and the Chinese technology firm Huawei, claiming that Washington employed visa restrictions to hinder legitimate commercial endeavors and compromise Argentina’s sovereignty.
In a statement issued late Wednesday, China’s embassy in Argentina asserted that the US embassy had endorsed what it referred to as the “China threat theory,” while broadening national security concerns to rationalize visa revocations that hindered collaboration between Huawei and an Argentine firm.
The embassy said that these actions were an unnecessary attempt to interfere with normal business relationships, arguing that they violated the rules of free-market competition and infringed on Argentina’s right to choose its own business partners.
The allegations arise amid the escalating geopolitical rivalry between Washington and Beijing throughout Latin America. The administration of US President Donald Trump, a close ally of Argentine President Javier Milei, has consistently voiced apprehension regarding China’s growing economic and technological influence in the region, particularly in Argentina, where Beijing ranks as the nation’s second-largest trading partner.
The dispute also follows the recent renewal of a five-year currency swap agreement between the central banks of China and Argentina valued at 130 billion yuan, or approximately $19.3 billion, highlighting the strengthening economic relationship between the two nations.
The US embassy in Argentina had not addressed the allegations at the time of publication, leaving Beijing’s claims unchallenged as strategic competition between the world’s two largest economies continues to shape diplomatic and commercial relations throughout Latin America.
