Crop Over 2026 concluded on Monday with Rihanna participating in Grand Kadooment, adorned in a custom costume designed by Barbadian designer Lauren Austin.
The design began with a turquoise foundation and evolved from that point onward. Gold, pink, green, and crystal embellishments adorned the entire piece, featuring a heavily beaded top and body chain-style detailing that elegantly traced her silhouette, with dangling gems and jeweled accents encircling her arms and legs. It dates back to the 1700s, when enslaved laborers on the sugar cane plantations celebrated the conclusion of the harvest season with music, dancing, and food. The current version lasts for weeks, brimming with soca and calypso competitions, parties, and cultural events, culminating on the first Monday in August with Grand Kadooment, the vibrant street parade showcasing the costumes. This year, the festival took place from July 4 to August 3.
Referring to it as Carnival is the error that many on the internet have made today. The parallels are clear and the energy is consistent, yet Crop Over stands as a unique celebration with its own history. Rihanna’s relationship with it has remained consistent over the years, aside from one extended break.
