Ariana Grande’s significant weight loss has left fans bewildered for two years, and now she is finally stepping away from the limelight

Her representative has confirmed that the pause follows the conclusion of the Eternal Sunshine Tour, after enduring seasons of unsolicited remarks regarding her weight and appearance.

Ariana Grande is taking a step back from the spotlight, and the timing reflects the challenges the pop star has faced over the past two years. A representative for Grande announced that the singer will be stepping back from public-facing work after her Eternal Sunshine Tour wraps up in London on September 1.

As reported by People, the 33-year-old is also stepping away from a significant stage commitment. She has withdrawn from the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George,” a production that was scheduled to bring her together again with “Wicked” costar Jonathan Bailey at London’s Barbican Centre next summer. That casting news generated significant excitement, making the exits feel even more substantial.

None of this is occurring in isolation. Grande’s decision comes shortly after the launch of her “Petal” album and the accompanying music video for its title track, which has sparked renewed public concern regarding her noticeably thinner frame. The comment section under the “Petal” video on Grande’s YouTube channel swiftly became a space for fans to voice their concerns, contrasting with the typical excitement, a change that seemingly influenced the timing of her representative’s statement.

A screenshot captures a social media comment thread discussing an individual’s health. Various users share their concerns and criticisms, mentioning observations about the person’s appearance, speculating on potential eating disorders, and urging for assistance.

A source close to Grande directly addressed the health concerns. Rolling Stone reports that the source indicated she delivers a highly physical performance, showcasing significant athleticism. Her current physique is portrayed as a result of the rigorous tour rather than a cause for concern. Her camp has relied on the same defense previously, yet it has never completely silenced the criticism.

The discussion regarding her body dates back to the promotional tour for the initial “Wicked” film in late 2024, during which she and her co-star Cynthia Erivo participated in a joint interview that became quite emotional. Grande characterized herself as a specimen in a petri dish, reflecting on the public scrutiny she has faced since her teenage years, starting from when she was 16 or 17. Erivo held Grande’s hand during this emotional moment.

That wasn’t the first time she brought it up. In 2023, following the release of promotional photos for her R.E.M. Beauty line that drew attention to her altered appearance, Grande shared a TikTok to clarify the context surrounding a previous version of her body that fans had regarded as the ideal standard of health. She disclosed that she was taking antidepressants and consuming alcohol simultaneously, emphasizing that what appeared to be the healthiest on the surface was, in reality, her lowest point. The cycle repeated once more in late 2025 during the press tour for “Wicked: For Good.”

The theme has permeated her music as well. Her 2024 track “Yes, And?” directly addressed the discomfort of having her body treated as public property, and Petal reportedly continues that theme, exploring her complicated relationship with fame and the public’s scrutiny of her.

The break might be brief. Grande concludes her North American tour in Chicago this week, wrapping up a ten-show run in London. She is also set to appear in “Focker-in-law,” the upcoming installment of the “Meet the Parents” franchise, alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, which is scheduled for release in November. It remains uncertain whether that press tour will reignite the same discussion, but currently, Grande’s team is distinctly separating the aspects of her life that are public from those that are private.
