Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has departed from the club with immediate effect, having concluded that his tenure at St. James’ Park has reached its end.
The 48-year-old communicated his intention to depart to the club’s hierarchy approximately two weeks ago. Newcastle first encouraged Howe to rethink his decision before requesting that he continue in his role while they sought a successor, a request he agreed to.
Howe leaves amid rising worries regarding the club’s transfer strategy and the squad’s direction, though sources indicate that these concerns were not the only factors influencing his decision. He does not plan to assume another managerial position right away and intends to take a hiatus from football.
His departure comes after a challenging summer for Newcastle, during which the team lost important players such as Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon, while captain Bruno Guimarães has drawn interest from Arsenal.
Howe’s last match in charge was Wednesday’s 4-1 pre-season loss to Bristol City.
Throughout his four-and-a-half-year tenure, Howe led Newcastle to their first significant domestic trophy in 70 years by clinching the 2025 Carabao Cup and achieved UEFA Champions League qualification on two occasions. Matthias Jaissle, the manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, is anticipated to take over from Howe following his achievement of winning consecutive AFC Champions League titles with the Saudi club.
