Paolo Maldini and Leonardo quit their jobs with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) just 10 days after starting to work on the national team project. This is because talks to hire Andrea Pirlo as Italy’s new head coach fell through.
Fabrizio Romano, a transfer expert, says that both men quit the project because of problems with FIGC president Giovanni Malagò after Pirlo’s appointment didn’t happen.
Maldini was recently named technical director as part of a major overhaul meant to rebuild the Azzurri after they missed qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the third year in a row. Leonardo joined the federation to help the former AC Milan and Italy back with his work.
Their resignations are another blow for the FIGC, which now has to find a new technical leadership team and a permanent head coach since Pirlo pulled out of the running.
