UK police are facing criticism after handcuffing a stabbed student prior to his death.
UK police are facing intense scrutiny following the release of bodycam footage that depicts a dying student in handcuffs, a situation that has ignited widespread outrage across Britain after a false racism allegation.
British police are under increasing scrutiny after bodycam footage revealed officers handcuffing an 18-year-old student while he was dying from stab wounds sustained in a knife attack in Southampton, southern England.
Henry Nowak passed away following a stabbing incident in December 2025. Vickrum Digwa, aged 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday after a court determined that he had made false claims regarding an assault by Nowak, alleging it was a racist attack.
The footage, released following the conclusion of court proceedings, depicts Nowak informing officers that he had been stabbed and was having difficulty breathing. Officers initially regarded him as a suspect following Digwa’s claim that his turban had been dislodged and that he had been assaulted.
The case has sparked public protests and political discussions throughout the UK. Prime Minister Keir Starmer characterized the footage as profoundly unsettling and demanded accountability, while government ministers indicated that the management of the incident had prompted significant concerns.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is conducting an investigation into the actions of the officers involved. Hampshire Police have issued an apology regarding their management of the incident, and one officer who was at the scene has stepped down from their position.
The killing and the police response have sparked a broader national discussion regarding policing, race, and public confidence in law enforcement. Political figures, such as Nigel Farage, have expressed criticism towards the actions of officers, while government officials have urged for calm and cautioned against exploiting the case to exacerbate divisions.
Digwa was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 21 years to be served. Authorities are reviewing the possibility of increasing the sentence.
