EU Takes Steps to Make Sure It Has Emergency Antiviral Supplies As Hantavirus Cases Spread
EU governments are ramping up their stockpiling of antivirals in response to increasing hantavirus infections, raising concerns about public health preparedness throughout member states.
The European Commission has declared the emergency distribution of an experimental antiviral treatment for hantavirus to France, Spain, and the Netherlands as health authorities react to a rising outbreak associated with a cruise ship.
European officials announced that the initial shipments of favipiravir, a drug viewed as a potential treatment for hantavirus infections, are now being sent to the impacted countries in response to time-sensitive requests for medical assistance.
The European Commission says that the European Medicines Agency has determined that favipiravir is the best possible treatment available right now for hantavirus infections, as there is no approved treatment specifically for this virus.
Japanese pharmaceutical company Fujifilm Pharmaceuticals contributed 1,400 tablets of the antiviral medication to aid the emergency response.
The European Union has initiated expedited procurement efforts to obtain additional supplies of the drug, anticipating potential new infections in the upcoming weeks.
Health authorities have confirmed 13 cases of hantavirus linked to a cruise ship that is thought to be at the center of the outbreak. Patients are presently undergoing treatment in France, Spain, and the Netherlands, with further cases also reported in Switzerland, the United States, and South Africa.
Interactions with infected rodents primarily transmit hantaviruses, which can lead to serious respiratory or kidney-related diseases in humans.
The World Health Organization estimates that as many as 100,000 hantavirus infections take place worldwide each year.
Certain strains of the virus may lead to severe, life-threatening complications, despite its low contagiousness among individuals. Officials have confirmed that three individuals have lost their lives since the onset of the outbreak.
Authorities throughout Europe report that investigations and monitoring efforts are ongoing as health agencies strive to contain the virus’s spread and avert additional fatalities.
