North Korea launches a ballistic missile while South Korea urges renewed peace discussions

North Korea on Tuesday launched a ballistic missile toward western waters, coinciding with South Korea’s renewed efforts for peace and denuclearization.

On Tuesday, North Korea launched multiple projectiles, which included at least one short-range ballistic missile, into waters off its west coast, as reported by South Korea’s military.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the launches occurred around 1 p.m. local time from a location near Chongju in North Pyongan Province.

The military reported that the missile traveled approximately 80 kilometers.

It was North Korea’s first recognized missile launch since April 19, when Pyongyang conducted tests of several short-range ballistic missiles that it claimed were armed with cluster bombs.

Earlier in April, North Korea announced tests of a new cluster-bomb warhead attached to a ballistic missile, as well as an electromagnetic weapon. Analysts indicated that the tests seemed designed to showcase the nation’s capability to engage in contemporary warfare.

In March, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared that the nation’s status as a nuclear-armed state was irreversible, emphasizing the importance of expanding a “self-defensive nuclear deterrent” for national security.

Despite the sanctions imposed by the United Nations since 2006 regarding its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, North Korea has intensified its military development efforts under Kim, eliciting condemnation from South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

On Tuesday, the spokesperson for South Korea’s Foreign Ministry called on North Korea to engage with Seoul’s peace initiatives and efforts to alleviate tensions.

The spokesperson stated that Seoul would uphold its objective of achieving complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula while adopting a phased and pragmatic strategy in collaboration with the international community.
