Queen Latifah, Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, and SZA headline an unforgettable evening at the 2026 AMAs

From Cardi B’s hip hop triumph to Queen Latifah hosting three decades after her initial AMA appearance, Black artists excelled in nearly every major category at the 2026 American Music Awards.

Queen Latifah hosted the 52nd American Music Awards last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, marking 31 years since she first co-hosted in 1995. Take a moment to reflect on that. A Black woman who began her journey in hip hop in the late 80s, rose to become a CoverGirl, an Oscar nominee, an Emmy winner, and one of the most enduring multi-hyphenates in the culture, stood on the AMA stage three decades after her debut and commanded the night. That moment was everything. However, the trophies narrated a tale of their own. Cardi B dominated the hip hop scene. Kendrick Lamar was awarded the title of best male hip hop artist. SZA has won the award for best female R&B for the second consecutive year. Bruno Mars entered the scene and revitalized R&B with his polished style. Leon Thomas achieved a significant breakthrough. Monaleo has made a significant breakthrough. The AMAs are an award show determined by fan votes, meaning that every name announced last night represents the artists that the audience is currently engaging with. And the audience is paying attention to us.

Begin with Cardi. The Bronx consumed the entire night. Cardi B secured the awards for best female hip-hop artist, best hip-hop song with “ErrTime,” and best hip-hop album for “Am I The Drama?” Three out of three. The album was released in 2025 after a seven-year wait from fans, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and continues to maintain its momentum. Cardi has achieved the remarkable feat of winning best hip hop song three times at the AMAs, setting a record as the artist with the most wins in this category. She holds the title of the most decorated rapper in AMA hip hop song history. As a Black woman from the Bronx who rose to prominence on Instagram, she faced criticism for her reality TV background and endured scrutiny for every action she took. Yet, she persevered, maintaining her determination and proving the doubters wrong. The receipts now rest on a shelf beside her Grammy. The drama tour is set to kick off next year and is already generating significant excitement as one of the most awaited events in hip hop.

Kendrick secured the title of best male hip-hop artist once more, thanks to the impact of GNX and the Grand National Tour with SZA, which also received a nomination for tour of the year at the AMAs. Kendrick has been functioning at a different level since 2024. Super Bowl Headline Pop-Out Concert. The battle of Drake. Pulitzer-worthy catalog. He continues to pursue his vision independently, under his own label, on his own terms, alongside his own creative team. He didn’t arrive to perform last night, and there was no necessity for him to do so. The victory is self-evident.

SZA has secured the title of best female R&B artist for the second consecutive year. She received the same award in 2025 for Saturn. Consistent supremacy, varied seasons. SOS Deluxe Lana maintained her position at the forefront of the genre, while the Grand National Tour with Kendrick stood out as one of the most significant hip-hop R&B tours of the era. Once overlooked as a backpack alternative R&B singer, she has now emerged as the undeniable leader of the genre. The BTS members presented her with the trophy on stage, a moment that encapsulates the current state of the genre in a remarkable cross-cultural way.

Bruno Mars had the most polished night of any Black male artist present. Top male R&B artist. Best R&B song for “I Just Might.” Top R&B album for the romantic soul. Three victories. Bruno occupies a unique space that few entertainers ever reach. The man possesses a residency. He owns a tequila brand that a major spirits conglomerate purchased for nine figures. The man has collaborated with Lady Gaga, earning the title of collaboration of the year. The man is among the most widely esteemed live performers in the industry. He continues to receive R&B awards as an artist of Filipino, Puerto Rican, and Hawaiian descent, having dedicated his entire career to honoring Black music, a commitment that has been recognized and reciprocated by the Black music community. The Romantic serves as a heartfelt tribute to a genre, which in turn responded with its own affirmation.

Leon Thomas has been awarded the title of breakthrough R&B artist. That is a name worth remembering if you haven’t been paying attention. Leon began his journey as a child actor on Nickelodeon, yet the presence of music has always been a constant in his life. He is signed to Ty Dolla Sign’s label and has dedicated the past few years to quietly developing a catalog that pays homage to Prince, D’Angelo, and the live band soul tradition that the genre required someone to embrace. Mutt has been one of the most critically acclaimed R&B records of the past year. The breakthrough is now officially confirmed.

Monaleo emerged as a groundbreaking hip hop artist. The Houston rapper has received considerable attention over the past few years, showcasing a delivery and presence that balances Texas regional pride with the current wave of women rappers like Megan, GloRilla, and Sexyy Red who are dominating the genre at this moment. Monaleo receiving recognition at the AMAs is a significant fan-voted moment that subtly conveys to the industry that the audience is focused on emerging talent, not solely on established stars.

Black women dominated the entire hip hop category from start to finish. The nominees for the Best Female Hip Hop Artist category included Cardi B, Doechii, GloRilla, Sexyy Red, and YKNiece. This category featured five Black women. Read that once more. Five years ago, this category would have featured Cardi and perhaps two other spots occupied by seasoned veterans. The depth of Black women in hip hop in 2026 has grown so profound that it’s impossible to confine them to just a five-name nomination list. Doechii, who recently won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in February with Alligator Bites Never Heal, may not have taken home an award at the AMAs, but her presence in the conversation indicates a significant shift in the landscape.

R&B conveyed a similar narrative. Nominees for Best Female R&B Artist include Kehlani, Summer Walker, SZA, Teyana Taylor, and Tyla. Five talented Black women. Three Americans and one African, Tyla, representing South Africa, are part of the global afro-pop pipeline that has seamlessly integrated into mainstream R&B. Teyana Taylor is delivering one of the remarkable late-career creative runs in the genre. Top male R&B artists include Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Daniel Caesar, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and The Weeknd. The genre is in a better state than it has been in ten years, and the AMA ballot showcased this improvement.

There were also more subtle victories. Burna Boy received nominations in the Afrobeats categories. Tyla received a nomination in the R&B category. The Afrobeats wave has become a lasting presence. The 2026 AMA ballot featured Burna Boy, Moliy, Rema, Tyla, and Wizkid, all contributing to the global afrobeats conversation—a statement that would have been unimaginable at the AMAs a decade ago. The continent is now essential. The continent serves as the focal point of the discussion.

Darius Rucker received the Veterans’ Voice Award. The first Black artist to win CMA New Artist of the Year, a frontman of Hootie and the Blowfish who transformed his career in country music and compelled the industry to create room for diversity, received one of the evening’s honorary awards. Karol G received the international artist award of excellence. The presence of Latin and Latina artists at the show was significant, with Bad Bunny, Shakira, KAROL G, and Fuerza Regida all taking home awards in the Latin categories.

And then there is Queen Latifah herself, the central thread of the entire evening. Latifah hosting the AMAs in 2026 was more than just a booking; it was a powerful statement. The same Queen Latifah who released All Hail The Queen in 1989 and U.N.I.T.Y. in 1993, transforming the landscape for women in hip hop, the same Queen Latifah who established a successful acting career, a daytime talk show, a record label, a production company, and an enduring empire over the past 35 years, the same Queen Latifah who first hosted these awards 31 years ago, stood on that stage last night as a symbol of an entire era of Black multi-hyphenate excellence. She had no need for a trophy. She was the prize. The show centered itself on her.

The narrative of last night is not about who faced defeat. For the second consecutive year, Taylor Swift received eight nominations but failed to win, a topic worth discussing separately. The story revolves around the victor. And the winners were us. Cardi is dominating the hip hop scene. Kendrick is a prominent figure in male hip hop, known for his dynamic style and impactful lyrics. SZA leads the way in female R&B, while Bruno takes charge in male R&B, along with R&B songs and albums. Leon Thomas and Monaleo represent the emerging talent of the next wave. Doechii, GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Kehlani, Summer Walker, Teyana Taylor, Tyla, PARTYNEXTDOOR, The Weeknd, Daniel Caesar, and Chris Brown are all part of the discussion. Queen Latifah supported the entire endeavor. Karol G, Bad Bunny, Shakira, and Fuerza Regida are proudly representing Latin music. Burna Boy and Tyla are proudly representing Africa and the diaspora.

This event is the outcome of a show shaped by the votes of Black and Brown audiences. This is the current state of the floor. Not the ceiling. Not a summit. The ground surface. The upcoming generation of artists in the genre is observing, creating, and preparing to make their mark on the same accolades in the next two to three years. Several of them have already made it onto the breakthrough nominee lists. Some of them remain in their bedrooms, capturing recordings.

However, last night was the proof. The American Music Awards in 2026 were ours. They should have approached it differently. Their approach remained consistent, even when the trophy count suggested an alternate narrative.

Congratulations to all the winners. Now, let’s return to our tasks.
