Landslide at an illegal gold mine in Angola has resulted in the deaths of 28 individuals

At least 28 individuals lost their lives when a landslide hit an illegal gold mining site in Angola’s northwestern Bengo province, according to local authorities, marking one of the deadliest illegal mining incidents in the country.

Four individuals were rescued from the site, as stated by the province’s civil protection and fire service on Sunday, who also noted that search operations had concluded.

Authorities reported that the victims of Saturday’s accident ranged in age from 16 to 35.

The diamond industry has historically linked illegal mining in Angola. However, the nation’s efforts to diversify its mining sector have sparked a surge in artisanal mining for various metals, including gold.

Angola, a significant diamond producer, is expanding into metals like copper and gold as diamond prices decline and synthetic diamonds gain popularity.
