Trump has announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 US troops to Poland
Donald Trump announces that the US will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland in response to ongoing tensions regarding NATO burden sharing.
Donald Trump has declared that the United States will send an extra 5,000 troops to Poland, following the Pentagon’s recent decision to halt a planned deployment of 4,000 personnel to the nation.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump connected the decision to Washington’s relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he openly endorsed during Poland’s presidential election last year. The US president, however, did not specify whether the newly announced troops were part of the previously delayed deployment or a distinct military operation.
The announcement arrives alongside indications from the White House that the US plans to reduce its overall military presence in Europe as part of Trump’s “America First” foreign policy agenda. Earlier this month, Washington revealed plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany amid tensions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the conflict involving Iran.
Trump has consistently criticized NATO allies for what he perceives as inadequate support for US-led initiatives aimed at pressuring Iran, especially concerning security issues related to the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign ministers from NATO member states are set to convene in Sweden on Friday for a summit featuring Marco Rubio, with discussions anticipated to center on burden sharing among alliance members.
Speaking prior to the summit, Rubio indicated that troop deployment matters would be included in the discussions, noting that Trump continued to express dissatisfaction with certain NATO allies. The US administration has not yet provided clarity on whether the troops being sent to Poland will be redeployed from Germany or sourced from other military units.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth previously characterized the cancellation of the original Poland deployment as merely a “temporary delay,” emphasizing that Washington continues to be dedicated to sustaining a robust military presence in the country. Poland has become one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe, with Nawrocki previously stating that the US president is the only global leader who can bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
