Emery Joins the Ranks of European Legends Following Aston Villa’s Europa League Victory

Unai Emery led Aston Villa to victory in the Europa League, giving him a record-setting fifth win and a major coaching milestone.

Unai Emery solidified his position as the best manager in the Europa League by leading Aston Villa to a 3-0 win over SC Freiburg in the final in Istanbul on Wednesday.

The win gave Emery his record-setting fifth Europa League title, tying him with Carlo Ancelotti, Giovanni Trapattoni, and José Mourinho as the manager with the most major European final wins.

Youri Tielemans scored the first goal with a beautiful shot, and Emiliano Buendía added Villa’s second goal in the dying seconds of the first half. Morgan Rogers scored a third goal before the hour mark, and the Premier League team easily won.

Villa had not won a big trophy since the League Cup in 1996, and the victory was their first European title since 1982, when they won both the European Cup and the Super Cup.

Emery explained that he was still truly thankful for the Europa League, which he had won three times in a row with Sevilla FC and again with Villarreal CF.

The Spaniard said after the game, “We fought hard in this competition and tried to do our best.”

Since Emery took over as manager of Villa in 2022, when the team was just above the relegation zone, the team has gone up a lot. Since then, he has led them back to the Champions League and put the club back among the best in Europe.

The victory was the proudest moment of captain John McGinn’s career. Striker Ollie Watkins said that Emery was a calm figure on the sidelines during the final.

Aston Villa has won more UEFA games than any other team since Emery took over, except for Real Madrid CF.
