Spain has officially shut its airspace to US military aircraft engaged in operations against Iran, a step that surpasses its earlier decision to deny access to jointly operated military bases, Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced on Monday.

“We do not permit the use of military bases or airspace for activities connected to the conflict in Iran,” Robles stated to reporters in Madrid. The initial report came from the Spanish newspaper El Pais, referencing military sources.

The decision requires US military aircraft to alter their flight paths to avoid Spanish territory when heading to targets in the Middle East, though exceptions are still allowed for emergencies, as reported by El Pais.

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo stated that this action aligns with the Spanish government’s wider position of refraining from involvement in what it perceives as a unilateral conflict conducted “against international law.” He recognized that the decision might put a strain on relations with the United States, emphasizing that it represents Spain’s legal and ethical stance rather than an act of diplomatic provocation.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has openly criticized US and Israeli actions against Iran, labeling them as reckless and unlawful. President Donald Trump has previously indicated a willingness to reduce trade with Madrid due to Spain’s refusal to permit the use of its military bases for the conflict.

The closure highlights increasing tensions among NATO allies regarding their roles in the Middle East and indicates Spain’s commitment to uphold a neutral stance in the intensifying Iran conflict.
