Russia Has Expelled a British Diplomat Due to Allegations of Spying

Russia has expelled a British diplomat due to allegations of espionage, leading the UK to denounce the action as unfounded.

Russia has instructed a British diplomat to exit the country due to accusations of espionage, representing the most recent escalation in the persistent diplomatic strains between Moscow and London.

According to Russian state media, the Federal Security Service (FSB) asserted that the diplomat submitted inaccurate information while seeking entry into Russia and tried to acquire sensitive information during informal economic discussions. The diplomat’s accreditation has been annulled, and they are required to leave the country within two weeks.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office rejected the allegations as “complete nonsense,” describing Russia’s actions as part of a “aggressive and coordinated campaign of harassment against British diplomats.” The statement emphasized that Russia has been “pumping out malicious and completely baseless accusations about their work” and reiterated that the UK would not accept intimidation of its embassy staff or their families.

The FSB reported that indications of intelligence operations were observed and that the diplomat “deliberately supplied false information” while securing a permit to enter Russia, as stated by the state news agency Tass. The person’s name has been reported in Russian state media as well.

After the expulsion, Danae Dholakia, the UK’s charge d’affaires, was called to the Russian Foreign Ministry and departed without making any remarks.

This incident marks the most recent development in an ongoing pattern of reciprocal expulsions between the two nations, a situation that has intensified following Russia’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Earlier this year, Russia expelled a British diplomat due to similar spying allegations, and in March 2025, two British officials were also expelled. The UK took action by revoking the accreditation of a Russian diplomat and their spouse, emphasizing its zero tolerance for intimidation directed at its personnel.

The continuous cycle of expulsions emphasizes the decline in UK-Russia relations and brings to light the increasing difficulties in diplomatic interactions between the two countries.
