Tyler Perry Attempted to Distribute Cash to Unpaid TSA Employees—But Federal Regulations Stopped Him
Atlanta Mogul Faces Government Regulations During Airport Visit
Entertainment mogul Tyler Perry is receiving accolades on social media following a significant, albeit unsuccessful, effort to assist Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Reports suggest that Perry reached the airport on the morning of March 26 with the purpose of personally distributing a “significant” sum of money to TSA agents who have been working without compensation since the government shutdown commenced on February 14.
Although his intentions were noble, bureaucratic obstacles hindered his financial contributions. Federal ethics guidelines strictly prohibit government employees from accepting cash gifts or monetary rewards while working at security checkpoints. The purpose of these rules is to maintain integrity and avoid any possible conflicts of interest in federal positions.
Federal rule 3.101-2 addresses the solicitation and acceptance of gratuities by government personnel: “As a general rule, no Government employee can ask for or accept any money, gifts, favors, entertainment, loans, or anything valuable from anyone who (a) has or wants to do business with the employee’s agency, (b) is regulated by the employee’s agency, or (c) has interests that could be significantly affected by the employee’s work.” Agency regulations authorize certain limited exceptions.
Perry’s effort to offer immediate financial relief to the struggling workers was ultimately fleeting due to these regulations. In spite of the obstacle, his action underscored the increasing desperation of federal employees who have endured weeks without receiving their paychecks.
There could be a glimmer of hope for these employees, nonetheless. Trump recently signed an executive order to reinstate payments for TSA workers, addressing the financial strain brought on by the ongoing shutdown.
Although the agents were unable to accept Tyler Perry’s cash immediately, the administration’s action indicates that official relief is indeed forthcoming.
