Russian and Iranian foreign ministers engage in discussions regarding the potential for conflict resolution

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov engaged in discussions on Friday regarding the potential for a diplomatic resolution in Iran. War was discussed with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi, according to Lavrov’s ministry.

“The ministers discussed in detail the most challenging military-political crisis in the Middle East, which erupted as a result of unprovoked American-Israeli aggression against Iran,” the statement on the ministry’s website noted. “There was an exchange of views on the prospects of shifting the conflict into a channel for a political-diplomatic settlement based on international law and considering the legitimate interests of all countries in the region.”

The statement further indicated that Lavrov provided specifics regarding Russia’s latest delivery of humanitarian aid to Iran.

Russia and Iran have entered into a strategic partnership agreement that encompasses political, economic, military, and energy cooperation; however, it does not entail a mutual defense accord.

In its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, which has persisted for four years, Russia has been employing drones designed by Iran.

On Friday, European foreign ministers engaged in a G7 meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to emphasize that Russia was assisting Iran in targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East conflict.

According to two Western security sources and a regional official close to Tehran, Moscow has been supplying satellite imagery to Tehran and has also assisted Iran in upgrading its drones to mimic the versions used by Russia in its operations against Ukraine.
