The championship club announced Hodgson’s appointment in a statement after the dismissal of Gerhard Struber, with the seasoned Englishman assigned the responsibility of stabilizing the team in the closing phase of the campaign.
Hodgson has not been involved in management since February 2024, when he resigned from his position at Crystal Palace. His extensive managerial career encompasses tenures with Liverpool, Fulham, and Inter Milan, in addition to guiding the England national team through two European Championship campaigns and the 2014 World Cup.
The appointment signifies a return to Bristol City over four decades after his initial tenure in 1982, during which he managed the club for four months, achieving three victories in 21 matches.
Hodgson’s inaugural match in charge will take place away against Charlton Athletic on April 3—44 years after his last game at the helm.
“I have had excellent discussions with the board, and I am truly enthusiastic about the chance to contribute until the end of the season,” Hodgson stated.
“We will begin our efforts promptly and aim for a strong performance on Good Friday.”
Bristol City currently occupies the 16th position in the Championship and has not secured a victory since February 24. A disappointing stretch of performances since mid-February has caused their play-off aspirations to diminish, resulting in a 12-point gap from sixth place.
Despite that setback, the club maintains an 11-point advantage over the relegation zone with seven matches left, providing Hodgson a solid foundation to guide the team to safety before the season ends.
