Nepal’s former Prime Minister Oli has been detained in connection with the fatalities that occurred during the Gen Z protests
Nepal’s former prime minister, K.P. Sharma Oli, was taken into custody on Saturday as police investigate his potential negligence in failing to prevent numerous deaths during the Gen Z protests last September.
This week, a Nepali panel that investigated violence during the anti-corruption protests recommended prosecuting Oli, 74, for his failure to prevent the crackdown on the protests.
Seventy-six individuals lost their lives during two days of turmoil, resulting in Oli’s resignation.
“This morning, he was taken from his residence,” stated Min Bahadur Shahi, a senior leader of Oli’s Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), in an interview with Reuters.
Police spokesman Om Adhikari confirmed the detainment of Oli and his home minister, Ramesh Lekhak.
Rapper-turned politician Balendra Shah was sworn in on Friday as prime minister after winning the March 5 parliamentary elections.
