Thousands Evacuate As Hawaii Faces Its Most Severe Flooding In Two Decades
Thousands are evacuating as a severe storm causes flash floods throughout Hawaii, putting Oahu and Maui at risk.
Thousands of residents have been compelled to evacuate throughout Hawaii following a powerful storm that has caused extensive flooding, leading officials to caution about the most severe deluge in twenty years.
Governor Josh Green stated that the risk of flash floods continues to be significant, especially on Oahu and certain areas of Maui County, as the state remains under a statewide flood watch due to the severe weather conditions.
“Do not underestimate this storm,” Green stated in a video message, emphasizing that although there have been no reported fatalities, there have been several serious injuries.
The storm signifies the second significant weather occurrence to impact the islands in just a week, exacerbating already perilous conditions. The governor reported that certain regions have experienced rainfall amounts ranging from 40 to 50 inches in the last 10 days, with additional precipitation anticipated throughout the state.
Authorities cautioned that the saturated state of the ground indicates that even light rainfall could swiftly lead to flash floods, road closures, and additional damage.
In Honolulu, Mayor Rick Blangiardi stated that the financial impact of the disaster may surpass $1 billion, as emergency responders work urgently to manage the crisis.
Over 230 individuals have been rescued thus far, as increasing floodwaters have inundated communities, displacing homes and vehicles, and necessitating evacuation orders for approximately 5,500 residents north of the capital.
Officials have expressed concern regarding a dam on Oahu that may be at risk of collapsing, advising residents to stay alert and adhere to safety instructions.
Emergency officials throughout the islands have released several flash flood warnings, urging residents to relocate to higher ground and steer clear of flooded areas, as numerous roads remain closed in various locations.
Flood alerts now encompass not only Oahu but also Maui, Molokai, and Hawaii Island.
The governor stated that the storm is anticipated to have “serious consequences for us as a state,” highlighting extensive damage to airports, schools, hospitals, roads, and homes.
“This is the most significant flood we’ve experienced in Hawaii in two decades,” Green stated at a news conference, encouraging residents to find shelter and follow evacuation orders diligently.
Meteorologists report that the islands are presently under the influence of a “Kona Low,” a gradually moving low-pressure system that pulls in warm, moisture-rich air, resulting in heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
Certain areas have experienced over 10 inches of rainfall, with winds gusting up to 100 mph, intensifying the effects of the storm.
