Brandy Addresses Speculation About Dating Shyne and Unveils New Memoir, “Unequivocally, we did not”

The R&B icon is addressing the “false narratives” about her history and asserting that she alone has the right to share her life story.

Brandy is now speaking out as others attempt to unravel her past. The singer recently took to social media to clarify the rumors surrounding her relationship with rapper Shyne during the late ’90s.

Although some have attempted to portray their previous relationship as a romantic one, Brandy is clarifying that they were always just friends.

“During the late 90s, I maintained a platonic friendship with rapper Shyne.” Regrettably, that friendship is now being inaccurately described as ‘we dated!’ I must clarify, we did not! 
The unexpected change in the narrative appears to have taken the singer by surprise, particularly as these stories are coming to light after so many years. Brandy acknowledged that she typically disregards the gossip and “seldom issues statements,” even when the headlines are entirely inaccurate. Yet, on this occasion, she believed it was essential to intervene and manage matters according to her own approach. She observed that the ongoing cycle of individuals sharing “their version” of her life is precisely what motivated her to ultimately publish her new book.

Furthermore, she mentioned that she seldom issues statements and usually overlooks headlines about herself, even when they are untrue. She directed fans to her memoir, PHASES, set to be released on March 31, 2026.

Brandy maintains a strictly factual approach, even regarding family matters. Although she cares for her brother Ray J, she was quick to separate herself from his recent online remarks regarding the situation. She stated unequivocally that she does not endorse the messages he has been sharing and highlighted that she never requested him to publicly defend her. “However, when I choose to advocate for myself, I manage matters independently. Although I have a deep affection for my brother Ray J, I do not endorse or agree with the messages he has posted on social media, nor have I requested him to speak on my behalf in any way,” she expressed.

This time is characterized by the icon asserting her independence and making sure that when her story is shared, it originates directly from her.
