SZA Reveals Her Label Predicted “SOS” Wouldn’t Outperform Taylor Swift — It Dominated the Charts for 10 Weeks

SZA is contemplating a time when the anticipation for her album “SOS” was significantly less than the outcome that ensued.

In a recent interview with i-D for The Lore Issue, released on March 6, the Grammy-winning singer revealed that her record label advised her not to anticipate her album surpassing Taylor Swift’s Midnights while both albums were vying for chart positions in late 2022 and early 2023.

“My label informed me that it was probable I wouldn’t surpass Taylor Swift, and I should get ready for that,” SZA reflected, remembering the initial forecasts regarding the chart competition.

The album instead showcased one of the most significant periods of her career. Following its release in December 2022, “SOS” dominated the Billboard 200 chart for 10 weeks, marking a significant commercial and cultural milestone for the artist. Two years later, SZA unveiled the deluxe version titled “LANA,” which propelled the project back to the top of the chart for another three weeks.

Reflecting on her journey, SZA expressed that the success continues to feel almost dreamlike.

“I found myself laughing by the third week.” It was simply a moment of confusion, wondering, ‘What is this?’ “I never even imagined I could be on the radio,” she said.

The artist, known as Solána Imani Rowe, shared that the experience transformed her perspective on what she can achieve in her career, particularly by helping her realize her potential in creative fields like music and broadcasting.

“I feel like I’m navigating adulthood pretty intensely right now, and I might be indulging in some food.” “I believe I may be okay when everything is resolved,” she remarked.

Amidst the fan discussions surrounding the chart competition, both artists expressed their support for one another’s work, with SZA having previously stated that she “genuinely loved” Swift’s Midnights album.
