Flavio Bolsonaro ties with Lula in Brazil election matchup, according to Datafolha

A recent Datafolha poll released on Saturday indicates that a second-round runoff between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro would lead to a technical tie.

The poll indicates that if the runoff took place today, Lula would garner 46% of the vote, while Flavio, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, would receive 43%.

If Lula were to compete against Tarcisio de Freitas, the governor of Sao Paulo, 45% of respondents indicated they would support Lula in the second round, while 42% would back de Freitas, resulting in a technical tie.

The general election in Brazil is set to take place on October 4. If no presidential candidate secures a majority of the vote, the two candidates with the highest number of votes will compete in a runoff on October 25.

The survey indicates that Lula, 80, is ahead in all first-round scenarios as he seeks his fourth presidential term. Flavio’s candidacy has gained momentum since Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently incarcerated, put his name forward in December.

Lula and Flavio, both 44, also hold the highest rejection rates in the poll. Approximately 46% of respondents indicated that they would not vote for Lula under any circumstances, while 45% expressed the same sentiment regarding Flavio, resulting in another technical tie.

Datafolha conducted interviews with 2,004 voters from Tuesday to Thursday across 137 municipalities. The survey has a margin of error of two percentage points in both directions.
