Gunmen Attack a Football Field, Killing 11 and Wounding 12 In Central Mexico
Gunmen opened fire on a soccer field in central Mexico, leaving 11 people dead and 12 injured on Sunday.
According to local authorities, gunmen opened fire at a football field in central Mexico on Sunday, leaving at least 11 people dead and 12 injured.
According to Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto, the assailants arrived just as a football game was coming to a close and started firing at everyone in the area. One victim eventually passed away in the hospital, and ten others perished at the spot. A woman and a child were among the injured.
According to Prieto’s social media message, the shooting is a part of a larger spike in criminal violence that is engulfing the city. He pleaded with President Claudia Sheinbaum for federal support to reestablish security and safeguard citizens.
In order to strengthen security in the area, the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office said it has started an investigation and is working with federal authorities.
Due to ongoing territorial disputes between the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the influential Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Guanajuato had the most homicides in Mexico last year.
Although analysts caution that official data may understate the extent of ongoing violence, Mexico’s government claims that despite the attack, the country’s murder rate in 2025 dropped to its lowest level since 2016.
