Venezuela has freed at least 80 political prisoners, according to the head of a rights group
As part of a continuous release process, at least 80 individuals deemed political prisoners by a prominent Venezuelan rights organization were freed on Sunday, according to the group’s chairman.
Alfredo Romero, the director of the Venezuelan human rights organization Foro Penal, stated on X that the individuals had been released from prisons around the nation and that additional releases were probably in the works.
Delcy Rodriguez, the temporary president of Venezuela, stated on Friday that 626 inmates had been freed from prison, but she did not provide a date for the alleged releases.
However, as of Sunday, Foro Penal had only certified the release of 156 political prisoners from Venezuela since January 8.
Rodriguez stated that she is scheduled to speak with Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Monday in order to request that the U.N. confirm the lists of people who have been released thus far in the Andean country.
