Brazil assumes Mexico’s diplomatic role in Peru following a disagreement regarding the asylum of a former prime minister
Brazil announced Sunday that Brazil would assume Mexico’s diplomatic responsibilities in Peru, two months after the Andean nation severed ties with the North American country over a former prime minister’s asylum request.
After former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez was granted sanctuary in the Mexican embassy in Peru, Lima broke off ties with the Mexican government in early November.
Chavez, the final prime minister of Pedro Castillo, the previous president of Peru who was overthrown and is in incarcerated, is accused of conspiring to dissolve Congress in 2022. The accusations were refuted by Chavez.
According to a statement from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Lima gave its assent and the Mexican government requested the representation.
According to Brazil, the representation covers the preservation of the assets and archives of the Mexican embassy in Peru, including the apartment of the head of mission.
