Boko Haram attack in Borno claimed the lives of at least eight Nigerian soldiers

Security sources reported on Wednesday that at least eight Nigerian soldiers lost their lives and 50 were injured during an attack by Islamist Boko Haram insurgents on a military formation in Borno State.

According to sources, the militants arrived on motorcycles and in armored vehicles during the incident on Monday.

A military source indicated that the military formation was involved in an offensive aimed at removing insurgents from the Timbuktu Triangle, a persistent militant stronghold in northeastern Nigeria.

According to the sources, the troops were engaged in a heavy gun battle with the insurgents.

On Wednesday, the military announced that troops had successfully cleared multiple Islamist strongholds in the Timbuktu Triangle and thwarted planned attacks involving vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED).

The military reported that troops successfully neutralised one explosive-laden vehicle; however, a second vehicle breached defensive positions, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, a civilian militia that assists the military.

A member of the CJTF confirmed the attack, stating that government forces were outnumbered during the assault.

The Timbuktu Triangle, an expansive and challenging region located in parts of Borno State, has for over a decade functioned as a stronghold for Boko Haram militants, who carry out coordinated assaults on military installations and civilian populations.

Boko Haram, a jihadist group that emerged in northeastern Nigeria in 2009, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The group has since divided, with one faction joining forces with Islamic State to establish Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which has progressively focused on military bases in recent years.

Even with ongoing military operations, Boko Haram and its offshoots persist in launching significant attacks, taking advantage of challenging landscapes, insecure regional boundaries, and a minimal state presence in certain areas of the dry northeast.

According to the sources, the Nigerian military has withdrawn its forces from the triangle to a base in Damboa. The remains of the deceased and the injured were being taken to the military hospital at Maimalari Barracks in Maiduguri.
