“My soul hurts,” said Brahim Diaz. Expresses regret after a penalty miss costs Morocco the AFCON Final
Brahim Diaz apologizes to supporters and promises to reward Morocco for their support after he missed a penalty against Senegal.
Following his failed penalty that cost Morocco the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal, Brahim Diaz has expressed regret to Moroccan supporters.
One day after the loss, on Monday, the Real Madrid player spoke out and assured fans that he will return their faith. On Instagram, Diaz commented, “My soul hurts.” Because of all the love you have shown me, every letter you have sent, and every act of support that has given me a sense of community, I dreamed up this title. I fought with all of my strength and, most importantly, my heart.
After being knocked down during a corner challenge, Diaz won a penalty in extra time. He tried a chipped spot kick to fool goalie Edouard Mendy after a protracted video review and objections from Senegal players. Senegal won the final in extra time when the attempt failed and Mendy caught the ball.
“I accept full responsibility for my failure and sincerely apologize,” Diaz stated.
“It’s going to be hard for me to get up, because this wound doesn’t heal easily, but I’ll try,” he said, reflecting on the setback. Not for me, but for everyone who supported me and endured my suffering.
“I’ll keep moving forward until I can give you back all of this love and be the pride of my Moroccan people.”
