The IOC declines to ban American athletes from the Winter Olympics in response to a military action in Venezuela

The Committee is putting an end to calls to block Team USA, arguing that despite ongoing bans against Russia, they cannot become involved in international conflicts.

Any discussion of prohibiting the United States from competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy is being put on hold by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Critics and politicians from all around the world started demanding that the United States be subject to the same sporting restrictions now imposed on Russia after a high-stakes U.S. military action in Venezuela earlier this month.

The IOC clarified that American athletes are not in danger, though. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and emphasized that political conflict has no place in the Olympic venue in a statement given to BBC Sport.

“The International Olympic Committee stands firm in its belief that sport must remain a beacon of hope, a force that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition, in a world shaken by conflict and division,” the statement said. “This stems from the Fundamental Principles of Olympism and is at the core of the Olympic Movement.”

Following claims that U.S. soldiers had captured dictator Nicolás Maduro and overthrown his dictatorship in an unexpected action that split international opinion, there is a campaign to punish Team USA.

They clarified that, as a worldwide organization, they must oversee a “complex reality” at each Games.

Since political issues and international disputes are outside of our purview, the IOC is unable to get actively involved in them. “This is the political sphere,” they added. “It is our responsibility to guarantee that athletes from all backgrounds can compete in the Olympic Games.”

The IOC has stated that no action is being taken against the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, despite the outcry from foreign commentators.
