Trump offers to resolve the Nile River flows conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia
U.S. President Donald Trump proposed on Friday to mediate the ongoing dispute regarding Nile River waters between Egypt and Ethiopia. In a letter addressed to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, which was also shared on Trump’s Truth Social account, he stated, “I am ready to restart U.S. mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia to responsibly resolve the question of ‘The Nile Water Sharing’ once and for all.”
The inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in Addis Ababa on September 9 has sparked significant anger in Cairo, which lies downstream on the Nile.
Ethiopia, the second-most populous nation on the continent with over 120 million residents, views the $5 billion dam on a tributary of the Nile as crucial to its economic aspirations.
Egypt asserts that the dam breaches international treaties and has the potential to lead to both droughts and flooding, a statement that Ethiopia disputes.
Trump has expressed admiration for Sisi previously, notably during an October visit to Egypt to finalize an agreement concerning the Gaza conflict. In his public remarks, Trump has reflected Cairo’s worries regarding the water situation.
