The US has pulled back certain personnel from its bases in the Middle East due to rising tensions with Iran

The United States withdraws personnel from regional bases amid escalating tensions following Iran’s warning regarding possible US strikes.

A US official informed the Reuters news agency that the United States is pulling back certain personnel from its bases in the Middle East due to escalating tensions with Iran.

The action comes in response to remarks made by a high-ranking Iranian official, indicating that Tehran had cautioned neighboring nations about its intention to target US bases should Washington initiate strikes on Iran.

In light of the extensive anti-government protests, Iran’s leadership has aimed to counter the ongoing threats from US President Donald Trump regarding potential intervention in favor of the demonstrators.

A US official, who requested to remain anonymous, indicated that the United States is withdrawing certain personnel from important bases in the region as a precautionary measure in light of increased regional tensions, according to Reuters.

According to Reuters, citing three unnamed diplomats, some personnel were advised to depart from the Al Udeid airbase in Qatar by Wednesday evening.

“It’s a change in posture rather than a mandated evacuation,” one diplomat stated, noting that they were unaware of any specific reason provided for the change in posture.

Qatar has confirmed that the reduction of personnel at the Al Udeid airbase is a response to the ongoing regional tensions.

Qatar’s International Media Office stated that Doha “continues to implement all necessary measures to safeguard the security and safety of its citizens and residents as a top priority” and that actions were underway for the “protection of critical infrastructure and military facilities.”

The US Embassy in Doha has not provided any comments.

Reports from the BBC and The i newspaper indicate that the United Kingdom is decreasing the number of its personnel stationed at the airbase in Qatar.

A representative from the Ministry of Defence stated that the department refrains from discussing specifics regarding basing and deployments for security reasons.

“The UK consistently implements precautionary measures to guarantee the security and safety of our personnel, which may include withdrawing personnel when necessary,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Al Udeid airbase is home to approximately 10,000 troops. More than a week prior to the US initiating air strikes on Iran last year, certain personnel and their families were relocated from US bases in the Middle East. Following the US attacks in June, Iran executed a missile strike on the base located in Qatar.

The US embassy in Saudi Arabia has advised its personnel to exercise caution and steer clear of military installations.

“In light of current regional tensions, the US mission to Saudi Arabia has recommended that its personnel practice heightened caution and restrict non-essential travel to military installations in the area.” The embassy stated on its website, “We advise American citizens in the Kingdom to follow suit.”
