The capital of Equatorial Guinea is moved from Malabo to Ciudad de La Paz

Equatorial Guinea has officially changed its capital city from Malabo to Ciudad de La Paz through a presidential decree.

Equatorial Guinea has officially moved its capital city from Malabo to Ciudad de La Paz as per a presidential decree.

The proposal to relocate the capital, previously situated on Bioko Island, away from the mainland, has been deliberated for nearly twenty years.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo stated that the decision was made for strategic purposes.

The urban growth of Malabo is another factor driving the relocation, as authorities indicate it has played a role in the move to the core of the Equatorial forest on the mainland.

The decree stipulates that presidential services, government agencies, and public enterprises are required to relocate from Malabo within a year.

The decree remains silent on the potential relocation of foreign embassies.
