Rooney is willing to go back to Manchester United, if Carrick is named temporary manager
Wayne Rooney said that he would be interested in working with Michael Carrick as a coach if Carrick became Manchester United’s interim boss after Ruben Amorim left last week.
Over the course of 13 years, Rooney played for the club and won a lot of trophies (559 games, 253 goals). He stopped playing football in 2021 and has been a manager at Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle.
The 40-year-old said on the BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show, “Of course I would” when asked if he would think about working as Carrick’s teacher. It makes sense. “By the way, I’m not begging for a job here. “Just so everyone knows, I would go in if I was asked. The most important thing is to choose the boss.
After he retired from football in 2018, Carrick stayed at United and worked as a teacher for Jose Mourinho. When Mourinho was fired, he was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
After Solskjaer was fired in 2021, Carrick was temporary manager for a short time. From October 2022 to June 2025, he was Middlesbrough’s manager for two and a half years.
“I think it would be a really good fit,” he said. “Michael loves the football club and would step in to do a job if he can.”That’s what the club needs—someone who lives and loves that club.
United is in seventh place in the Premier League. On Saturday, they play Manchester City.
